February 2010 Update!

Two years and seven months old!

The past week has been AMAZING! I don't want to jinx anything, but I was told by someone who had a child diagnosed with Autism that this would happen. They told me everything would be okay and that Rowan acts exactly the way their child acted. They said that one day it was like someone flicked on a light switch and their child became responsive to the world and started talking. This week has felt as if maybe just maybe his switch has been flipped. He is hugging me and he isn't even sick! He is looking me in the eyes, smiling real big and trying to communicate with me. He interacted with my grandparents the most I have ever seen and entertained them and even looked at them and smiled. A really big one is that he has started mimicking! Rowan has NEVER done this. Everything he does has always been some weird little gesture or movement he made up himself. I point and he points. Someone is singing, or a song is playing and he is trying to sing with it. Someone laughs and he is laughing.

We went and saw a movie at the dollar theater and he sat and watched it. He sat on my lap and didn't run around or have to be doing his own thing. When music played he danced and clapped to the beat. He laughed when they laughed in the movie. He even was screaming and kicking at the movie at the scary parts. During the sad parts he whimpered. I have never seen him following something and understanding and interacting with it so much. I can tell you this no one in the theater enjoyed The Princess Frog as much as Rowan did. During the movie he snuggled with me and made sure I was paying attention as well. It was just amazing.

We have spent a lot of time with Sloane this past month. This is always awesome because Rowan thinks that she is the coolest EVER! One night we had a balloon slumber party. Another day we went to a Birthday party being held at a gymnastics gym. I wanted Sloane to be there in hopes it would keep Rowan behaving well. The kids had a blast playing on the trampoline and in the foam pit. Then came the whistle and it was time for cake and ice cream. All the kids ran over to get a picture, well all except mine. Rowan and Sloane began screaming, kicking and crying. Everyone even kids younger than both of them just stared at us in horror. This went on for about ten minutes straight as I tackled each one and made them put their shoes and coats on. However; once back in the car Sloane says to me in her sweetest voice "Candi when I was screaming it, it made my nose start to run." She was so calm and polite that it made me laugh.

Another milestone for us this month took place at Starbucks. My car is broken so that is the only place close enough for us to go. It has been cold otherwise I might try to venture a little farther. We went in and I ordered hot chocolate for each of us. Rowan stood by my side and then when we left it seemed like he had wanted to stay. So the next day I tried it again with the intent to stay.
We went to Starbucks during the busy lunch hour, ordered some drinks and also some food for Rowan. We sat down at a table squeezed in between a bunch of other people. Rowan sat in his chair and I sat in mine. We each enjoyed our treats. On our left side two business men spouting off about networks and suits. On our right a stressed out woman and her accountant collecting data for her taxes. Then us quiet besides a few comments and questions I asked him. Then us making faces at each other from across the little table. We did this for over five minutes!!!!!!!!!!!! It was an amazing day and month!
